The Pantone Color Institute has named Classic Blue as its color of the year for 2020.
The color offers stability and connection, said the vice president of the international sellers of color, Laurie Pressman.
“It’s a reassuring presence,” Pressman told The Associated Press.
Classic Blue creates a feeling of great space, Pressman said. This color of blue is officially known as Pantone 19-4052.
Another blue color, Cerulean, was chosen for 2000. That was the first time Pantone announced a color for the year ahead. Cerulean is the color of the sky during the day. Classic Blue is the color of the sky just as the day ends.
“We are looking ahead,” Pressman said. “The day is over. We are looking forward to the evening. What’s going to come?”
Pressman and her team looked to the worlds of art, fashion and home goods to reach the decision.
At the announcement, Pressman said the color choice was not related to it being the usual color choice of the Democratic Party in the United States.
“This was not a political move for us…We do not look at color through a political lens. We look at our life through a colorful lens,” she told the AP.
Pantone chose the color Living Coral for 2019 and Ultra Violet in 2018.
The timeless Classic Blue mixes well for both men and women, and for objects from chairs to cars.
Pressman said, “You read about buying things to last and this is a timeless blue…It’s always there and you’re comfortable with it, like blue jeans.”
